Global Congress Targets Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria


Abuja – The Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease will increase efforts against sickle cell disease (SCD) in Nigeria. Nigeria has the highest global prevalence of the condition. Obiageli Nnodu, chairperson of the local organizing committee, stated, “As the nation with the highest prevalence of sickle cell disease, Nigeria stands at the forefront of the global fight against the disease.” The congress will address sickle cell disease in Nigeria.

Nnodu said Nigeria faces a large SCD burden. An estimated four to six million people in the country live with SCD. More people carry the sickle cell trait.

Congress Aims and Key Partners

The Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease aims to:

  • Improve collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Drive innovation in SCD treatment.
  • Highlight effective solutions for managing and eradicating sickle cell disease in Nigeria and globally.

The congress is in Abuja from June 3 to June 6. It will gather healthcare professionals, researchers, patients, families, caregivers, advocates, industry leaders, and policymakers. Nigeria’s Ministry of Health supports the congress. Partners include Novo-Nordisk, Novartis, and Pfizer.

Expected Results and Participation

The congress will feature new research findings, treatments, and therapies for Sickle Cell Disease. Over 500 participants are expected from various countries, including Nigeria. The event will be a platform for advancing understanding, treatment, and support for people with SCD. Nnodu said, “We’re excited to host the Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease at this time in Africa!” The focus is on tackling sickle cell disease in Nigeria.
