IBADAN – A promising young WAEC candidate was killed in Ibadan on Tuesday. A stray bullet from a police officer’s gun struck the student during a police shooting. The fatal incident happened on Gbagi Market Road. Eyewitnesses reported the officer was involved in a high-speed chase of a vehicle. Occupants of the pursued vehicle were suspected to be “Yahoo Boys.”
The student, on his way to sit for a crucial WAEC examination, was reportedly on a motorcycle with his twin brother. This exam day turned tragic when a police officer, in pursuit of the fleeing vehicle, discharged a weapon. One of these bullets found an unintended mark, hitting the young scholar. The shock of the police shooting rippled through the community.
Community Demands Justice After Student’s Death
The injured student was quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival. Grief and anger then spilled onto the streets. Irate youths carried the student’s lifeless body to the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan. Their voices rose, demanding justice for the life cut short. They directly appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde for intervention and accountability. “He was on his way to his exam with his twin,” one witness lamented, underscoring the profound loss. The protesters insisted on immediate action regarding the stray bullet death in Ibadan and called for a review of police engagement protocols.
Official Response Awaited Amid Calls for Accountability
Heavy security presence was noticeable at the entrance of the government secretariat. Officers worked to manage the grieving and outraged crowd.
The body of the deceased WAEC candidate killed has since been deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital morgue. As of the filing of this report, official statements from the Oyo State Police Command or the state government regarding the incident were still pending. The community, however, remains resolute. Protesters continue their call for justice and a thorough investigation into this tragic Ipolice shooting. Reports indicated a security aide to the Governor assured the assembled crowd that the government would pursue justice for the student.
