Igbo Group Petitions UN over Lagos Property Demolitions

Lagos, Nigeria – The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has petitioned the United Nations, accusing the Lagos State Government of unfairly demolishing properties. The property demolitions, according to ASITU, specifically target Igbo-owned businesses in Ebute Ero Market.

ASITU National President, Chief Emeka Diwe, stated the demolitions are “a calculated expropriation.” He called them “an assault on justice, equality, and the fundamental principles of property rights.” Diwe claims the actions are “systematic” and “targeted.”

“Despite repeated appeals for fairness and adherence to the rule of law, the Lagos State Government has continued its…campaign of selective demolition, disproportionately targeting Igbo-owned properties,” Diwe said. The stated reason from the government was not included in the original report and is thus ommited.

The petition was also sent to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the ECOWAS Court of Justice. ASITU wants these international bodies to intervene. They demand the Lagos State Government be held accountable.

“This is…a fight for justice, dignity, and equal citizenship,” Diwe emphasized. ASITU demands an immediate end to these actions. They also seek accountability from those responsible.

The group claims the Lagos State Government did not follow due process before the property demolitions. Igbo property owners say their grievances were ignored.

ASITU also urges Igbo people in the diaspora to invest in Igboland. They promote the Aku Ruo Ulo initiative. The goal is to develop the region’s economic potential. Further details regarding a motive behind the alleged actions will be added as information is available.
