Ilesa Prison Escapee Captured After Lagos Manhunt

LAGOS – Police in Lagos State have successfully captured Kabiru Oyedun. Oyedun, 39, was an escapee from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State. The arrest of this Ilesa prison escapee captured occurred in the Ayobo area of Lagos. Officers apprehended him around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2025.

Oyedun had fled the prison when a section of its perimeter wall gave way. Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced the capture. He said continuous surveillance and smart police work led to Oyedun’s arrest. Hundeyin noted the capture highlights the police command’s firm stance against criminals entering the state.

Prison Wall Breach Sparks Alert

The initial escape from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa happened after heavy rainfall. The rain caused a structural failure, damaging part of the prison’s defenses. This breach allowed inmates to flee. In response, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) immediately launched a wide manhunt. They issued a public safety alert and boosted teamwork with police commands in other states. The capture of Kabiru Oyedun marks a significant first step in locating all fugitives. This success helps rebuild public confidence in the security of correctional facilities.

Public Help Sought with N5 Million Bounty

To speed up the recapture of other escapees, the NCoS has offered a N5 million reward. This substantial sum is for any reliable information that leads to an arrest. This financial incentive is a key part of getting the public involved in national security efforts. Police sources confirmed that Oyedun will be sent back to Osun State. He will then be handed over to the correctional authorities there. The NCoS has affirmed its strong commitment to making prison buildings stronger and stopping future escapes. Officials continue to urge citizens to report any suspicious individuals or activities promptly.
