Independence Bridge Closure Causes Major Lagos Traffic Jams

LAGOS – Motorists on Lagos Island experienced severe traffic gridlock Wednesday following the Independence Bridge closure. The bridge, also known as Mekwen Bridge, is closed for a two-month rehabilitation project.

The Federal Controller of Works for Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, confirmed the closure. It affects traffic moving from Ahmadu Bello Way and Adeola Odeku towards Marina, Eko Bridge, and Onikan. Officials advise drivers to use alternative routes and apologize for the delays. The Independence Bridge closure is expected to last until the end of May 2025.

Motorists Face Long Delays

Traffic conditions significantly worsened on Wednesday. Long vehicle queues formed, stretching from Lekki through Victoria Island up to Falomo Bridge. Drivers reported major delays. “I left the Island at 2:00 PM… As of 4:00 PM, I was still stuck,” said motorist Mr. Gbenga Aduloju. Another driver, Mrs. Esther Alfonso, stated, “A 15-minute journey took me almost two hours.”

Alternative Routes Provided

Authorities have designated alternative routes to ease congestion. Traffic can divert through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, and Falomo Roundabout. These routes provide access to Obafemi Awolowo Road, Osborne Road, and Inner Marina. Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers are managing traffic flow. Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi urged patience, noting the temporary Independence Bridge closure is necessary for essential road repairs.
