Abuja — Imagine a referee that isn’t really on anyone’s side. That’s what Nigerian lawmakers are aiming for with a new bill concerning political parties. It’s all about creating a truly independent group to keep parties in check.
House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Representative Marcus Onobun are behind the idea. Their bill wants to set up an “Independent Authority.” This group would handle who gets to be a political party, keep an eye on the finances of political parties, and settle any arguments. The big goal? Make sure everything is open and above board, strengthening Nigeria’s democracy concerning how its operate.
Why the Change for Political Parties?
Right now, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is in charge. They oversee all 19 registered political parties. But here’s the catch: some worry that politicians interfere too much with INEC’s work regarding its operation.
This new authority would take over some of INEC’s jobs. The idea is to make sure no one is pulling the strings when it comes to political parties and their money. Supporters think this could fix some long-standing problems in how elections are run, particularly concerning political parties.
Even big names like ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and former INEC boss Attahiru Jega have spoken out. They’ve pointed fingers at political meddling as a major problem affecting parties.
Jonathan said INEC needs to be totally independent, filled with trustworthy people. He also suggested that any political leaders pressuring INEC to do wrong should step down. Jega also warned that political interference affects who gets appointed or removed from key election positions related to overseeing political parties.
Supporters are hoping that this independent watchdog could be the answer. It could help clean up Nigeria’s elections and make them fairer for everyone, especially by ensuring fair practices among parties.
