ILORIN – Adebisi Olalekan, an internet fraudster sentenced in Ilorin, received a two-year prison term. The Federal High Court in Ilorin delivered the sentence. Olalekan is 23 years old. He was sentenced for cybercrime offenses. These offenses included chin eating and impersonation.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Olalekan. The EFCC stated Olalekan impersonated foreign nationals. These included Joshua Compbell Novak. Olalekan defrauded victims of $100,000. He also defrauded victims of $1,000.
The EFCC reported Olalekan created fake online profiles. He used these profiles to deceive victims. He also used them to defraud unsuspecting foreign victims.
Luxury Items Forfeited After EFCC Conviction Forfeiture
The court ordered Adebisi Olalekan to forfeit several assets. These include:
- N124,402,322
- A white Mercedes Benz ML350 (valued at N30 million)
- An iPhone 14 Pro Max
The EFCC said Olalekan used the iPhone 14 Pro Max to commit the crimes. Justice Awogboro granted the final forfeiture of these assets. All traced assets go to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The EFCC’s investigation showed Olalekan used fraud proceeds for acquisitions. He acquired the luxury vehicle with these proceeds. He also accumulated the large sum of money in his bank account through fraud. The internet fraudster sentenced in Ilorin lost all illicit gains.
Court Judgment Warns Cybercriminals
The court’s judgment is a warning. It warns perpetrators of cybercrime. Olalekan’s conviction demonstrates EFCC’s commitment. The EFCC is committed to fighting cybercrime. It is also committed to recovering illicit assets.
The forfeited assets will go to the Federal Government. These assets may support efforts against financial crimes. They may also promote economic development.
