IPOB May 30 Sit-At-Home vs Police Security Pledge

ANAMBRA – The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has directed a full public holiday and sit-at-home order across Nigeria’s South-East for May 30, 2025. The group says this will honor Biafran heroes from the 1967-1970 Civil War. However, police officials have pushed back, promising security and encouraging normal daily life, setting the stage for a contentious IPOB sit-at-home on May 30.

IPOB’s Strict Orders for Biafra Day Observance

Emma Powerful, acting as IPOB’s spokesperson, laid out comprehensive restrictions in a recent statement. He announced a ban on all road, air, and sea travel from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the designated day. The group stated no public or private activities would be permitted in what it terms “Biafran territory.” This includes a total shutdown of schools, markets, places of worship, and any public gatherings. Mr. Powerful emphasized the day is intended for families to reflect on the Biafran War’s impact.

“The IPOB family and movement inform Biafrans, supporters of Biafra, and freedom advocates that May 30, 2025, is designated a public holiday and lockdown across the South-East in honour of Biafran heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice for our existence,” Powerful declared. He also mentioned that memorial lectures are planned in Nigeria and internationally leading up to May 30.

Police Counter: Security Assured for Residents

In a direct counter to IPOB’s directive, the Anambra State Police Command has assured residents of their safety. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s public relations officer, urged citizens to continue their lawful business without fear. “We are not aware of the lockdown order, but the residents are assured of adequate security and are encouraged to go about their lawful business without entertaining any fear,” Ikenga stated. He added a crucial point: “The police will not force people to come out from their homes, but we will provide adequate security for anyone who comes out to carry out his lawful activity on the said day.” This statement clearly signals a potential challenge to the IPOB sit-at-home on May 30 enforcement.

Global Protests, Exam Concerns, and Service Exemptions

IPOB’s plans extend beyond the South-East. The group has called on its members living abroad to hold demonstrations. These protests are also meant to demand the release of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. According to Powerful, IPOB has contacted the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) regarding adjustments to the May/June Senior Secondary School Examination timetable to avoid the sit-at-home. State governors in the South-East and South-South have also reportedly been informed of the group’s intentions.

Powerful confirmed that essential service providers, such as medical personnel, firefighters, journalists, and petroleum product distributors (NUPENG), will be exempt from the day’s restrictions. However, a stark warning was issued to others: “We advise everyone to remain indoors on May 30 to avoid any confrontation or stray bullets from security operatives.”
