Abuja – Former President Goodluck Jonathan warned against attempts to impose a one-party system through manipulation. He said it could suffocate the country and lead to confusion and anarchy. Jonathan spoke at a memorial lecture for Chief Edwin Clark.
He stated that if a one-party state is considered, it must follow a thorough and systemic process. He noted Tanzania’s one-party system under Julius Nyerere was achieved procedurally, not by manipulation.
Defections Raise Nigeria One-Party System Concerns
Jonathan’s warning comes as many politicians defect from opposition parties like the PDP, LP, and NNPP to the ruling APC. This trend has raised concerns about a potential Nigeria one-party system.
The former President’s comments highlight risks to Nigeria’s democracy. He stressed the need for a level playing field for all political parties.
Tribute to Chief Edwin Clark
Jonathan paid tribute to Clark, describing him as a father. He praised Clark’s personality, memory, courage, and willingness to take on challenges. Jonathan said Clark’s legacy cannot be replicated and there is no need to find a replacement. The discussion on a one-party system occurred at this event.
