Judge Blocks Trump Funding Cuts Over Sanctuary Policy

Washington D.C. – A federal judge ruled Donald Trump cannot withhold federal funds from “sanctuary cities” that limit cooperation with immigration agents. The order means the judge blocks Trump funding threats against these localities.

What Are Sanctuary Cities?

Sanctuary cities like San Francisco and Chicago generally restrict local police from helping federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents identify or detain undocumented residents. Trump has criticized these policies and threatened funding cuts for cities not cooperating with ICE, vowing mass deportations if re-elected.

Court Order Stops Funding Cuts

Judge William H. Orrick’s order prevents the Trump administration from cutting funds due to sanctuary policies. He wrote the administration is “RESTRAINED AND ENJOINED from directly or indirectly taking any action to withhold, freeze, or condition federal funds” based on this issue. The ruling stops the administration from using money to pressure cities on immigration, as the judge blocks Trump funding tactics.

Administration Response and Other Rulings

Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, called the ruling a “Judicial coup.” This follows other court actions against the administration’s immigration policies. Last week, another judge blocked a Trump administration attempt to end a parole program for immigrants from several Latin American countries.
