Lagos Building Collapse: One Dead, Three Injured in Mushin

LAGOS – A Sunday afternoon in Mushin turned tragic when a one-storey building under construction collapsed at 96 Ishaga Road, opposite the Idi Araba Central Mosque. This building collapse trapped several workers, prompting a swift rescue operation by multiple city agencies.

Emergency responders worked quickly. Three adult males were pulled alive from the debris with various injuries. They received immediate medical aid at the scene and were then transported to a hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Service. Despite these efforts, one worker did not survive. Authorities later confirmed the recovery of the worker’s body from the rubble. Both Ibrahim Farinloye, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Lagos Territorial Office Coordinator, and Shakiru Amodu, spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the fatality.

Rescue Operations and Official Response Underway

The scene was busy with activity. The Isolo Fire Station of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, under Director Margaret Adeseye, collaborated with teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police. Shakiru Amodu had earlier reported, “A male adult has been rescued while efforts are ongoing to rescue other victims trapped under the rubble.” Search and rescue operations continued as officials carefully searched the site.

The cause of this building collapse is now under investigation. This Mushin incident serves as a serious reminder of recent similar events. Less than a month ago, a three-storey building collapsed in Ojodu-Berger, Lagos, also resulting in one death and several injuries. These recurring collapses highlight ongoing concerns about construction safety standards and the enforcement of building regulations in Lagos.
