Lagos – Thirty-nine buildings across prominent Lagos estates face imminent building demolition as the state government cracks down on illegal encroachment along the Ikota River. Structures in Oral Extension Estate, Westend Estate, and Megamound Estate have been marked for either partial or total removal. The government asserts these developments have unlawfully infringed upon the designated Right of Way (RoW) of the vital waterway, following numerous petitions from concerned parties. This decisive building demolition plan aims to reclaim and preserve the natural course of the Ikota River.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, personally led an enforcement team to the affected areas. He detailed that of the marked structures, 20 are slated for complete removal, eight for partial demolition, with an additional 13 buildings affected in Westend Estate.
Developers “Pushing Back” on Ikota River Right of Way
Addressing the reasons behind the impending building demolition, Commissioner Wahab expressed the government’s frustration. He explained that despite ongoing engagements with developers to find amicable solutions, they “continued to push back the RoW, which is not good for anybody.” He emphasized that the integrity of the state’s waterways is non-negotiable.
However, Wahab offered a brief window for occupants to salvage their belongings. “We want to allow them to move their things out,” he stated, adding a stern warning: “If they don’t comply, we will wield the big stick.”
Preliminary Demolition Underway, Compliance Demanded
The government has already initiated preliminary demolition activities, with fences of some of the marked buildings being taken down. This action signals the state’s resolve to enforce its environmental laws.
Commissioner Wahab seized the opportunity to remind developers of their obligations. He stressed the critical need to obtain all requisite clearances, including comprehensive drainage clearance and environmental impact assessment (EIA) documents, before embarking on any land reclamation or construction projects. While the government states it remains open to engaging affected parties, it is resolute in ensuring strict compliance with all urban and regional planning regulations to prevent future encroachments and uphold environmental order through measures like this building demolition.
