LAGOS – Police in Lagos State have captured a suspected cybercriminal, Malik Opeyemi, aged 22. Opeyemi is accused of posing as a woman online to deceive and blackmail numerous men. This arrest marks a successful takedown of a widespread sextortion scheme busted by vigilant officers. CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police spokesperson, announced that detectives from Area F Command apprehended Opeyemi on May 16, 2025. The arrest followed a brave victim stepping forward to file a formal complaint.
Investigations paint a disturbing picture. Since January 2025, this Lagos online predator allegedly ensnared over thirty men. He is believed to have illicitly collected more than ₦4 million. Opeyemi’s method involved luring his targets into nude video calls. He would secretly record these intimate sessions. He then used these recordings to blackmail the victims, demanding money to prevent the videos from being leaked. Victims were also pressured to pay a ₦25,000 “subscription” fee for non-existent explicit content.
Crucial Evidence Seized, Police Warn Public
Officers tracked Opeyemi to Oyo State, where he was arrested. He was then brought to Lagos. During the operation, police seized two Android phones—an Itel and a Samsung—from the suspect. A forensic examination of these phones uncovered many explicit images and videos of different victims, confirming the scale of the online blackmail arrest.
Commissioner of Police CP Olohundare Jimoh affirmed the Command’s commitment. “We are determined to fight cybercrime. We will protect our residents from such digital exploitation,” he declared. The Commissioner strongly advised the public to be extremely cautious online. He urged everyone to report any suspicious online interactions to the police immediately. This case serves as a stark reminder of online dangers.
