Lagos – Get ready for potential traffic delays. Lagos State is starting major bridge repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, a key route connecting Marina and CMS.
The repairs kick off on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and are expected to last until Monday, May 26, 2025. The Ministry of Transportation announced the plan on Sunday.
A significant stretch of road will be closed, from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) all the way to Independence Bridge. The service lane at Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge will also be off-limits.
What Drivers Need to Know
Don’t worry, there are other options. You can still use the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue. Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue itself provides access to Victoria Island, the 3rd Mainland Bridge, and Inner Marina/CMS.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on the ground, directing traffic. Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi is asking drivers to be patient, explaining that the closure is essential for the Federal Ministry of Works’ rehabilitation work.
To minimize headaches, the government suggests planning your trips ahead of time and considering public transportation during this period.
