Madrid – Kylian Mbappé set a new Real Madrid record on Saturday, exceeding Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal total from a debut season. Mbappé scored his 34th goal for the club during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in Seville. Although Real Madrid lost the final 3-2, Mbappé’s free-kick surpassed Ronaldo’s 33 goals from the 2009-10 season. This marks a significant goal record early in his time with the club following his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
New Benchmark Set
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 33 goals in his first season (2009-10) after joining Real Madrid from Manchester United, establishing a high mark for new players. Mbappé reached 34 goals with a free-kick in the 70th minute of the final, which tied the score at 1-1 temporarily. This achievement establishes a new goal record for a player’s first season at the club, surpassing Ronaldo’s previous figure.
Zamorano Club Record Remains
Another Real Madrid record is now closer for Mbappé. Iván Zamorano holds the club record for most goals in a debut season with 37, set in 1992-93. Mbappé needs four more goals to break Zamorano’s record. Real Madrid plays Celta Vigo next Sunday in La Liga, presenting Mbappé an opportunity to increase his goal tally and pursue Zamorano’s long-standing club record.
