Ministry Probes Alleged Student Loan Deductions

ABUJA – Nigeria’s Ministry of Education is launching an investigation into claims of improper student loan deductions. Universities are accused of taking funds without authorization from student loan accounts and NELFund accounts.

Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa called the allegations “very disturbing and extremely concerning.” He stressed that any unauthorized deductions represent a serious breach of public trust. “We are committed to strengthening transparency…and ensuring that every kobo allocated for student welfare is used appropriately,” Alausa declared.

Urgent Probe into Student Loan Deductions

The Ministry has called an urgent meeting. It will involve vice chancellors from the implicated universities and the head of NELFund. The goal is to get to the bottom of the student loan deductions claims and ensure full accountability. Minister Alausa reinforced the government’s determination to safeguard public money. He assured that students must get the full support intended by government education programs. “Let me assure Nigerians that this matter will not be swept under the carpet. Anyone found culpable will face appropriate sanctions,” he stated.

New Measures for Transparency

To boost oversight, the Ministry is partnering with the Athena Centre. Together, they will introduce a compliance tracking system and a public webpage monitoring university transparency. Additionally, a training program will teach university finance and IT staff how to manage open financial portals effectively. Alausa emphasized that good governance is central to the National Education Sector Reform Initiative (NESRI).
