Abuja – The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) proposed a four-pillar framework. It aims to guide national and global efforts against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Dr. Tochi Okwor is Head of Disease Prevention and Control at NCDC. She said countries must act clearly at the national level. Dr. Okwor stated the fight against antimicrobial resistance requires a plan based on four pillars.
The Four Pillars
The NCDC framework includes four key parts:
- Strategic Information: Use data to guide realistic strategies for health systems.
- Equity: Ensure fairness in all antimicrobial resistance efforts.
- Accountability and Inclusion: Allow communities input on it actions.
- Whole-of-Society Approach: Recognize it requires cooperation. Health, agriculture, environment, and education sectors must work together.
Roadmap for Response
Dr. Okwor said these pillars offer a clear roadmap. Nigeria and other low- and middle-income countries can use it. This helps build an effective response to it. She noted that antimicrobial resistance makes treating infections difficult. Adopting this framework helps countries improve surveillance. It also supports careful antimicrobial use and lowers it risks.
