Niger State Flood Deaths: Priest, Passenger Die at Collapsed Bridge

MINNA – Reverend Father James Omeh, a parish priest, and a passenger, Charity John, have died in Niger State. Their Hilux vehicle was swept away by strong floodwaters on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Father Omeh served St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Gulu. He was also the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) coordinator in Lapai LGA. These Niger State flood deaths highlight a known infrastructure problem.

Tragedy at Known Danger Spot

A local source reported the incident occurred around noon on the Lapai-Gulu Road. A bridge on this road had collapsed due to heavy rains the previous night. “He attempted to turn back towards Duma village, but the water current was too strong,” the eyewitness stated. The bodies of Father Omeh dies in flood victim Charity John were recovered hours later. Local volunteers and the Sarkin Ruwa (King of Water) assisted the recovery efforts.

Community’s Repeated Warnings Unheeded

Residents of the Gulu-Lapai area voiced their anguish and frustration. They spoke of the persistent danger from the deteriorating road and the collapsed bridge. This infrastructure has long awaited government attention. “We’ve warned authorities repeatedly about this road, but nothing has been done,” a community leader declared. The recent tragedy has intensified calls for immediate government action. Locals fear more lives are at risk if the Lapai Gulu bridge collapse remains unaddressed. The community stressed the bridge had been impassable for years, especially during rainy seasons, leaving travelers vulnerable.

Governor Bago Mourns, Praises Priest’s Peace Work

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed deep sorrow over the deaths. He described Father Omeh’s passing as “painful and very unfortunate.” In a statement released Monday by his media aide Jonathan Vatsa, Bago acknowledged the loss. “Father Omeh’s passing is a great loss to CAN, the Christian community, and the state at large,” the Governor said. He commended the priest’s dedication to peacebuilding. He recalled Father Omeh’s recent efforts to foster unity through talks with traditional leaders, including the Emir of Lapai. Governor Bago extended his condolences to CAN, the Catholic Church, and the family of the deceased. He prayed for the eternal rest of their souls.
