ABUJA – China will establish electric vehicle (EV) factories in Nigeria, Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai announced. This initiative aims to deepen cooperation in Nigeria’s mining sector and support Nigeria EV production . The Ambassador made these statements during a visit to Dele Alake, Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development.
Ambassador Dunhai called Nigeria a “great country” with “tremendous natural resources.” He noted that Chinese companies are currently active in Nigeria, exploring and processing minerals.
A recent meeting between Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and China’s President Xi Jinping has advanced their countries’ relations. “Both presidents agreed to elevate ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership,” Ambassador Dunhai stated. This partnership supports Nigeria’s goals for economic diversification.
Zero Tolerance for Illegal Mining
Ambassador Dunhai affirmed China’s commitment to responsible investment. He stressed that Chinese investors must follow Nigerian laws.
“We have zero tolerance for illegal mining,” Dunhai declared. He added, “The Chinese government is ready to cooperate with Nigerian authorities to bring any culprits to justice.”
Minister Alake acknowledged China’s contributions to Nigeria’s economic development. He also voiced concerns about unauthorized mining operations that negatively affect the sector.
“Such incidents undermine the good work of many compliant Chinese firms,” Minister Alake said. He mentioned a recent viral video suggesting bribery. The Minister urged stronger collaboration to ensure only legitimate and responsible companies operate in Nigeria’s mining industry.
Driving Local Manufacturing: Nigeria EV Production China
Nigeria is shifting its mineral policy, Minister Alake explained. The country plans to move from exporting raw minerals to prioritizing local value addition. Nigeria intends to use its substantial lithium deposits for domestic battery production and Nigeria EV production .
“For years, our minerals have been exported raw to fuel foreign industrialisation. That must change,” Alake asserted.
The Minister encouraged Chinese partners to invest in the complete manufacturing cycle within Nigeria. Such investment would create jobs and develop local skills.
Ambassador Dunhai confirmed China’s support for this initiative. He announced, “Plans are already underway to establish electric vehicle factories and other manufacturing ventures in Nigeria.” This aligns with President Xi’s goal to promote industrial development in Africa and significantly advances Nigeria EV production .
