Lagos, Nigeria – The United Nations has praised Nigeria’s government and National Assembly for allocating $200 million to healthcare. UN Assistant Secretary General Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa made the commendation following the withdrawal of funding support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This Nigeria health funding is a notable national commitment.
Funding Sets Continental Precedent
Ms. Eziakonwa spoke in Lagos during a meeting with a delegation including Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu. Eziakonwa, also the UNDP’s African Regional Director, called the Nigeria health funding decision “leadership” and said it “sets a precedent on the continent.” She stated that nations must directly manage their population’s health.
UNDP Supports Inclusion and Technology Investment
The UN official also expressed support for increased women’s political participation in Nigeria. She backed Deputy Speaker Kalu’s advocacy for a women’s seat reservation bill. Eziakonwa noted the low representation of women in Nigerian politics hinders progress. She also recommended investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI), calling it fundamental for development. Eziakonwa confirmed the UNDP’s continued partnership with Nigeria. Deputy Speaker Kalu affirmed the House of Representatives’ commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development.
