Nigeria Hydrogen Policy: Germany Fuels Future Energy Plan

ABUJA – Germany has strongly reaffirmed its backing for Nigeria’s ambitious shift to a hydrogen-based economy. This crucial support forms part of a significant strategic energy partnership between the two nations. Key stakeholders recently reviewed Nigeria’s draft Nigeria Hydrogen Policy. The pivotal two-day working group meeting in Abuja brought together government leaders, private sector innovators, academic experts, and civil society voices.

German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annette Günther, addressed the assembly with a clear message. “Germany recognises Nigeria’s immense potential in renewable energy, essential for the production of green hydrogen,” Günther stated. She explained that Germany’s updated hydrogen strategy now includes firm import targets. This strategy identifies partnerships with resource-rich countries like Nigeria as fundamental to achieving Germany’s own net-zero emission goals. “Germany cannot meet its substantial hydrogen needs through domestic production alone. That is why pioneering countries like Nigeria are key partners in securing our energy future,” Günther emphasized.

Nigeria’s Hydrogen Vision: A Catalyst for Growth and Climate Action

Auwal Mohammed, representing Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, outlined hydrogen’s vital role. He said hydrogen is critical for addressing the nation’s energy needs and meeting its climate ambitions. “With over 409 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and vast renewable energy resources, Nigeria is well positioned to become a leader in clean and green hydrogen,” Mohammed declared. He pointed out that the Zero Draft Nigeria Hydrogen Policy provides a solid framework. This framework will guide infrastructure development, establish clear regulatory standards, and foster vital innovation. “Our refineries and potential industries already use hydrogen at various stages of production. This presents immediate opportunities for rapid domestic development,” he added, showing how existing assets can accelerate Nigeria’s hydrogen economy.

A Strategic Alliance Forging an Inclusive Future

Markus Wagner, GIZ Country Director, commended Nigeria’s dedicated progress. He praised the country’s efforts in shaping a truly inclusive hydrogen strategy. “This important gathering marks another significant step in Nigeria’s journey. It moves Nigeria closer to energy transition and the vital diversification of its economy,” Wagner observed. He noted the partnership’s deep roots, stretching back to 2008. Wagner also stressed the importance of the German-Nigerian Hydrogen Office. Launched in 2021, this office actively supports policy creation, essential capacity building, and crucial innovation.

Ambassador Günther also praised Nigeria’s dynamic youth, its proactive private sector, and its strong research institutions. She described them as powerful drivers for the nation’s success. “The creativity, resilience, and ambition of the Nigerian people are invaluable assets. They will ensure the success of a just and inclusive hydrogen economy,” Günther affirmed.

Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), was represented by Abel Igheghe. Ekpo confirmed the nation’s commitment to refining the Nigeria Hydrogen Policy using valuable input from all stakeholders. He concluded firmly, “The dedicated work we do today will directly shape the future of our nation’s energy resilience and its lasting prosperity.”
