A Nigerian medical doctor based in the United States is appealing to authorities for protection amid an ongoing land dispute in Lagos State. Dr. Ojo Oluwatosin has requested intervention from the Lagos State Commissioner of Justice, Lawal Pedro, and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, concerning a parcel of land in the Lekki area.
Land Grab Threatens Hospital Project
Dr. Oluwatosin claims the land, intended for the construction of a medical hospital, was invaded by over 20 individuals who forced workers and security offsite. This occurred despite a court order granting an interlocutory injunction in Dr. Oluwatosin’s favor. The land dispute is currently under litigation.
Court Order Disregarded
On December 10, 2024, Justice Akinkunmi Idowu issued a ruling explicitly restraining the defendants in the case. The order stated: “An order for an interlocutory injunction restraining the respondents… from trespassing, harassing, or going into the land or carrying out any activities whatsoever on the land, pending the hearing and determination of the suit.”
Continuing Harassment Alleged
Despite the court order, Dr. Oluwatosin alleges that unidentified individuals continue to visit the land on weekends, intimidating workers.
Lawyer Appeals for Intervention
Ayodele Osanyinlusi, Dr. Oluwatosin’s lawyer, has urged authorities to protect his client’s life and property. He warned that immediate intervention is necessary to prevent potential violence.
“We do not want violence or chaos,” Osanyinlusi stated. “We are law-abiding Nigerians, which is why we are calling on the police and well-meaning citizens to help prevent any bloodshed.” He further emphasized the need for the police and the justice commissioner to enforce the court order and prevent further land grabbing attempts. The dispute highlights ongoing concerns about property rights and the rule of law in the Lekki area of Lagos.
