Osogbo – A disturbing revelation from Amnesty International: 149 women have been murdered in Nigeria already in 2024. The organization’s local chapter in Osun State is raising its voice, urgently calling for action against the escalating crisis of femicide.
Joshua Oyebode, the passionate leader of the Osun State group, spearheaded a powerful awareness march on International Women’s Day. His message was clear and direct: these numbers represent real lives tragically cut short, and the violence must end now. “We are here to expose this hidden horror,” Oyebode declared, “to ensure everyone understands the terrible reality of this social problem.”
A Grim Global Reality
The statistics paint a horrifying picture. According to the United Nations, a staggering 140 women and girls are murdered worldwide every single day. Nigeria is facing its own devastating crisis, with approximately 149 women falling victim to femicide in 2024 alone. Oyebode passionately urged everyone to acknowledge their responsibility in stopping this violence.
From Words to Action: Enforcing Justice
Oyebode challenged the government to move beyond simply creating laws. “Nigeria has laws against sexual violence – a good start,” he acknowledged. “But we need to see these laws enforced! It’s time to stop just talking and start truly protecting our women.” His message resonated with urgency: Only effective implementation of existing laws can eradicate femicide and secure a safer future for all Nigerian women.
