Nigeria’s Life Expectancy Lags Behind Global Average Report

Abuja – A new report shows a concerning fact: Nigeria’s life expectancy is improving, but it’s still much lower than the world average. The 2024 State of the Nation’s Health Report says the average Nigerian lives to 54.6 years. The global average is 73.3 years. That’s a big difference of over 25%.

What’s Holding Nigeria Back?

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare released the report. It points to ongoing health problems as a key reason for the lower life expectancy. Diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis are still common. Nigerian women tend to live longer than men. This is similar to other countries.

The report also shows a high birth rate. The average Nigerian woman has 4.8 children. This number is higher in rural areas (5.6) compared to cities (3.9). More than half of Nigeria’s people now live in cities. But access to good healthcare and services is still a problem, especially in poorer areas.

Economic Progress vs. Everyday Reality

Nigeria’s economy grew in 2024. But the benefits are not reaching everyone. A large number of Nigerians (63%) live in poverty. They struggle to afford healthcare, school, and basic needs. Youth unemployment is also a problem, especially for young women. The Ministry says that more money for healthcare is needed to improve life expectancy for all Nigerians.
