Nigeria’s Maternal and Neonatal Mortality: WHO Urges Action

Abuja – The World Health Organisation (WHO) calls on the Nigerian government and civil society groups to address the country’s high rate of maternal and neonatal mortality. WHO Country Representative Dr. Walter Kazadi Molumbo described the current death rate as “unacceptable” and stated immediate action is needed.

Collaboration Required to Reduce Deaths

Dr. Molumbo said coordinated action from all groups is necessary to lower death rates. The WHO partners with the Nigerian government, including through the recent MAMI initiative aimed at reducing mother and infant deaths. This program allows government, civil society, and communities to work together. Cooperation can significantly reduce maternal and neonatal mortality before 2030. “It’s not about them and us; it’s all of us working together,” Dr. Molumbo stated.

Strengthening Healthcare Systems is Key

WHO focuses on strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare. This includes better work with health workers, improving guidelines, and ensuring readiness to meet health needs. Nigeria accounts for nearly 20% of global maternal deaths, highlighting the importance of this work. Experts state that joint efforts by government, civil society, and healthcare professionals can improve health systems and reduce preventable deaths of mothers and newborns.
