NIN Social Services and Nigerian Benefits

The Nigerian government has made a significant announcement: the National Identification Number (NIN) is now essential. Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), stated that Nigerians need their NIN to access social services and receive government assistance. This means a NIN is your key to unlocking important support.

This important news came during a meeting focused on the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) Project. Akume highlighted that giving every Nigerian a digital identity is a top priority for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

How Ministries are Working Together on NIN Social Services

Dr. Tanko Sununu, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, confirmed that his ministry is collaborating closely with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). This partnership ensures that the NIN is a firm requirement for accessing vital social services and government aid programs. It is about a streamlined approach to delivering benefits.

Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the NIMC Director-General, expressed her appreciation for the support received. She assured everyone that the commission is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities.

Nigeria is building a comprehensive national database of its citizens using the NIN. The World Bank’s Identity for Development (ID4D) project is providing crucial support, significantly speeding up the registration process. By last October, an impressive 115 million Nigerians and legal residents had already obtained their NINs.

“We’re confident that with ongoing collaboration and the support of everyone involved, we can greatly enhance the national identity system,” Coker-Odusote stated. “Making NIN social services readily available is a crucial part of this effort,” she concluded.
