NMA Ultimatum To UNIUYO Issued Over Lecturer Welfare Concerns

UYO – The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State branch, has issued a 21-day NMA ultimatum to UNIUYO concerning the welfare of medical lecturers at the University of Uyo. The NMA stated that if the university does not meet its demands, its members will begin an indefinite strike.

NMA State Chairman, Dr. Aniekan Peter, announced the decision on Wednesday. He explained that some medical lecturers have not been moved to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS). This is despite approval from the UNIUYO Governing Council.

Key NMA Demands

The association detailed several major issues. These include long delays in promoting some medical lecturers, causing them financial loss. The NMA also noted a significant shortage of medical lecturers and medical officers at the university health center.

The NMA demands the immediate transfer of all eligible medical lecturers to the CONMESS pay scale, including back pay. It also calls for the immediate promotion of overdue medical lecturers with payment of promotion arrears. The NMA ultimatum to UNIUYO started on April 2, 2025. The NMA leadership stated its readiness to meet with university management within this period to resolve the issues.
