Nnamdi Kanu Lawyer Warning: Judge Cautions Over Conduct

ABUJA – Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, received a direct caution from the Federal High Court on Wednesday. Justice James Omotosho delivered the Nnamdi Kanu lawyer warning. The judge addressed alleged unprofessional behaviour that could lead to disbarment for the counsel of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader.

Justice Omotosho spoke strongly about Ejimakor’s reported sharing of misinformation on social media. “This is part of the noise in the market,” the judge remarked. “It should not distract us from what we went to buy.”

The warning followed a protest letter from Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN). Awomolo raised concerns about online posts and the streaming of court proceedings, terming the situation “embarrassing.”

Kanu Agabi (SAN), leading the defence, acknowledged the issue with the publication. He offered apologies to both the court and the prosecution.

DSS Witness Testifies in Kanu’s Ongoing Trial

The day’s proceedings also featured the continued cross-examination of a Department of State Services (DSS) operative. The witness, identified by the codename Mr BBB, provided testimony relevant to the case, even as the Nnamdi Kanu lawyer warning set a serious tone.

Under questioning by defence counsel Paul Erokoro (SAN), Mr BBB confirmed Nnamdi Kanu had alleged he was abducted in Kenya. However, BBB stated that verifying such a claim was outside his designated role.

The DSS operative also denied that the agency conducts operations beyond Nigeria’s borders. “We don’t operate outside the shores of Nigeria,” BBB asserted. He affirmed that the DSS gathers intelligence from multiple sources. These sources include social media activity and human informants.

Mr BBB accused Kanu of using Radio Biafra to incite violence. “He expressed his determination to achieve Biafra by all means, including war,” the witness claimed. He connected Kanu’s broadcasts to specific violent incidents, such as the murder of an army couple in Orlu and the arson of public institutions.

Key Judgments Admitted; Court Adjourns

A significant development saw Erokoro tender certified copies of three previous court judgments. These judgments affirmed Kanu’s fundamental rights.

Among these was a notable ruling from the Abia State High Court, dated January 19, 2022. That decision had awarded Nnamdi Kanu N1 billion. The compensation was for the Nigerian Army’s unlawful invasion of his home in 2017.

Justice Benson Anya, in that ruling, had declared the military operation unconstitutional. He also found it to be a breach of Kanu’s rights under both Nigerian and international law. The Federal High Court admitted these judgments as official evidence.

Following this, the defence team requested an adjournment. They stated a need to prepare a video clip for submission as evidence. Justice Omotosho granted this request. The cross-examination of witness Mr BBB will now continue on Thursday, May 22.
