Oyo – A new chapter has begun in Oyo as Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade officially ascended the throne to become the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. This significant event follows the passing of the respected Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who reigned until his death on April 22, 2022. Oba Owoade now holds the revered position of paramount ruler for the ancient kingdom.
The formal coronation ceremony, a moment rich with tradition, took place on Saturday at Oliveth Baptist High School in Oyo town, drawing attention from across the Yoruba nation and beyond.
Coronation Heralds New Era
Earlier this year, in January, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde formally presented the staff of office to Oba Owoade, recognizing his authority. The weekend’s public coronation celebrated this transition. The new Alaafin himself marked the occasion’s significance, declaring, “Today’s event signalled the beginning of a new era for the sons and daughters of Oyo Town, the state and the entire Yoruba race home and abroad.” Before this public celebration, Oba Owoade completed the essential 21-day Oro Ipebi seclusion rites on March 29. This traditional process is a mandatory preparation for installing the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
Distinguished Guests Witness Ceremony
Highlighting the occasion’s importance, the coronation was attended by prominent royal figures and dignitaries. Key attendees included the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi; and the Aare Oona Kankanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams.
