Abeokuta, Ogun State – Residents of Ajebo Road Housing Estate, Kemta, Abeokuta, are demanding immediate government action to improve road safety on the Kemta-Somorin road. This urgent call follows a fatal hit-and-run incident that killed Professor Oladipo Ademuyiwa, a Biochemistry professor at FUNAAB.
Professor Ademuyiwa was struck by a vehicle on Prof Wole Soyinka Road. The driver fled the scene. This tragedy, along with other recent fatal accidents, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for pedestrian safety. The Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association in Ogun State also protested the deaths of three members hit by a truck. They threatened to block the Ajebo/OGTV motorway until the government takes action.
“The Ogun State Government has ignored repeated requests for speed breakers and other safety measures,” said Ayo Ajasa, chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate. He pointed out that speed bumps were installed on the Ilugun end of the road, but not near their estate.
Ajasa criticized the government’s inaction. He demanded immediate installation of speed breakers, lorry barriers, and clear traffic signs. “We have suffered repeated accidents, near-fatal encounters, and now the loss of an esteemed professor,” he stated. “This is unacceptable.”
He noted another accident occurred within 24 hours of Professor Ademuyiwa’s death, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
“We hold the government accountable,” Ajasa added. He urged the Governor of Ogun State to intervene immediately to prevent further loss of life. He also called on the media, civil society organizations, and Nigerians to support their demand for safer roads. The focus keyword, hit-and-run, is central to understanding the residents’ plea.
