Okowa Explains Defection to APC for Abuja Link

Asaba – Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa explained his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He said the move helps connect Delta State with the government in Abuja. Okowa, current Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and his cabinet left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC last week. Okowa explains defection was necessary to access federal goodwill and resources.

Tapping into Federal Resources

Okowa stated the practical reasons for the party switch. “There is a need for us to connect to Abuja, that goodwill that is in Abuja, that resource that’s in Abuja,” he said. He described the move as “patriotic and strategic.” Okowa mentioned difficulties during his eight years as governor when Delta was in opposition. “I was governor for eight years… I did my best but we lost a lot,” he stated.

A Call for Unity Within APC

Beyond federal ties, Okowa explains defection is also about strengthening the APC in Delta. He asked existing APC members in the state to work with the new members, including himself and Governor Oborevwori. He said the goal is to make the APC the main party in Delta. Okowa also asked for support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. “It’s time for the people of Delta State to stand strong in support of President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori,” he said. As Okowa explains defection, the move serves party and state interests.
