Omotoso Rearrested on New Immigration Charges

East London – Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso was rearrested on Saturday morning in East London, South Africa. Police commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed the arrest occurred “just after church.” Omotoso faces charges for violations of South Africa’s Immigration Act. He is expected in court on Monday. This arrest follows his recent acquittal on multiple rape charges.

Acquittal Followed by New Allegations

Timothy Omotoso, 66, was acquitted last month. He had been jailed for nine years regarding charges of rape and sexual assault of young women from his church. The judge in that case criticised the prosecution. The judge stated the state did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. Several young women had testified against Omotoso. They alleged he selected them and subjected them to abuse. The current development, Omotoso rearrested, now focuses on his immigration status.

Arrest Context: GBV Rates and Immigration Law

Omotoso’s rearrest occurs in South Africa, a country with high rates of gender-based violence (GBV). Over 42,500 rapes were reported in the 2023-24 financial year. This figure averages more than 116 rapes daily.

While the previous trial involved serious accusations, the new charges against Omotoso relate specifically to alleged breaches of the Immigration Act. Authorities have not yet released specific details of these immigration offenses. These details are expected during his court appearance. The news of Omotoso rearrested has drawn public attention.
