An Osun State High Court sentenced two friends to seven years in prison for a brutal attack. Justice Kudirat Akano presided over the case in Ede. Oluwashina Adenle Wakeel and Yusuf Adewale assaulted Abdul Salam Jubril Oyewale. The attack resulted in Oyewale losing his right eye.
The court arraigned the convicts on Thursday. They faced a seven-count charge, including conspiracy, attempted murder, and assault. The case was filed in March 2023. It falls under various sections of the criminal code.
Oyewale testified that the attack happened in September 2022. He was riding a motorcycle on Ibode Poly Road in Ede. A black Toyota Corolla blocked his path.
“The 2nd Defendant got out of his car and removed my motorcycle key,” Oyewale said. “He and others started beating me.” The assailants, including the 1st Defendant, brutally attacked him. They inserted a stick into his right eye, causing severe bleeding.
Oyewale sought treatment at several hospitals. These included Minaret Hospital Osogbo, University College Hospital Ibadan, and Eye Foundation Hospital Lagos. Doctors told him that his retina had detached. It could not be repaired.
Morufat Bello and Adekunle Adeniyi led the prosecution. They presented four witnesses and nine exhibits. They proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Ayodele Laogun, the defense counsel, asked for leniency. He cited the convicts’ family responsibilities. Justice Akano sentenced them to seven years for conspiracy. She also sentenced them to three years for assault causing harm, one year for assault, and one month for breach of peace. The sentences will run concurrently.
