The Osun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun of involvement in a plot against Governor Ademola Adeleke. The accusation surfaced amid escalating tensions surrounding local government control in the state.
Sunday Bisi, Osun PDP chairman, claimed that IGP Egbetokun deployed Police Special Forces to escort individuals into local government council secretariats. Bisi stated this action instigated unrest. The PDP views these developments with concern.
The local government crisis has reportedly caused six deaths. One reported victim is Remi Abass, former chairman of Irewole Local Government Area.
Bisi called on the international community to intervene. He urged them to caution IGP Egbetokun. Bisi said, “The whole world must warn and prevail on Mr Kayode Egbetokun.”
The PDP leader further alleged that IGP Egbetokun disregarded security protocols. He stated this created a climate of fear. He mentioned that approximately ten people had died in violent clashes within 48 hours of the unrest starting.
Bisi connected the police actions to the upcoming local government elections. These are scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025. Bisi said, “The IGP is ready to bend the rules and allow killings of our people just to prevent the elections from taking place.”
