Rivers State – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rejected President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State. The PDP stated this action violates the 1999 Constitution.
PDP spokesman Debo Ologunagba said, “The unconstitutional declaration by President Tinubu of the suspension of the democratically elected Governor of Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and appointment of an unelected individual, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (rtd), to govern the State is a clear attack on our nation’s democracy”.

Ologunagba stated the President’s action is an attempt to capture the state. He said it is part of a larger plot to impose a one-party state.
He also noted that Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution does not give the President sole power to declare emergency rule without National Assembly approval. The PDP warned that imposing emergency rule in Rivers State could cause chaos.
The party called on Nigerians to resist any attempt to create a one-party state. They emphasized that Governor Fubara was elected for a four-year term. His mandate cannot be taken by executive order.
