LAGOS – Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has firmly stated his intention to contest the 2027 general election. He assured supporters he will run again under the Labour Party. This declaration for his Peter Obi 2027 bid was made in a widely circulated video.
In the video, shared through the party’s WhatsApp channel, Obi directly addressed a group of young Nigerians. He said, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.” This confirms his position as a Labour Party election contender.
Obi also spoke on the internal troubles within his Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He placed responsibility for these disruptions on the ruling government. “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government. Quote me anywhere,” Obi asserted. He recalled past instances, such as under President Yar’Adua, where presidential action helped resolve party disputes.
Obi Vows System Cleanup, Eyes Reforms
Peter Obi stressed an urgent need for far-reaching Nigerian political reform. He accused the current administration of actively working to undermine opposition parties. “These are deliberate problems caused by the system,” Obi stated. “These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity.” His remarks come as speculation continues about a possible political alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
While Obi did not directly comment on the rumored Obi Atiku alliance, sources suggest both political figures are dissatisfied with their current party situations. They might explore a joint ticket for 2027. Obi, however, emphasized that a healthy democracy depends on strong opposition. “Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition,” he explained.
Call to Youth: Stay Engaged in Elections
Addressing Nigeria’s youth, Obi urged them to remain committed to improving the electoral process. He encouraged them not to lose hope when facing resistance from established interests. “Positive change will also be resisted by those who are beneficiaries of the old order,” he observed, a key point for his Peter Obi 2027 platform.
He underscored the power of voters in ensuring election credibility. Obi reminded the audience that no party official or agent could override the people’s collective will.
Hinting at his long-term plans, Obi shared, “By 2027, I’ll be 65. I don’t want to be contesting elections in my 70s.” This comment suggests the 2027 election could be his final presidential campaign. The unconfirmed Obi Atiku alliance continues to generate interest among those seeking a strong opposition force against the ruling party. Obi remains a prominent Labour Party election figure.
