ABUJA – Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has called for a major 2027 overhaul of Nigeria’s political system. He strongly criticized the APC government . Obi spoke at the launch of “Obi, the Political Change Agent” in Abuja on Tuesday.
Obi lamented Nigeria’s insecurity, poverty, inflation, and systemic neglect. He accused the current administration of ignoring the suffering of citizens. “Today in Nigeria, we are not officially at war, yet Nigerians are living in IDP camps in their own country,” he stated. “We use public resources to renovate government buildings… Meanwhile, women are dying trying to give birth. A woman dies every seven minutes.”
He said the government focused on repainting offices and celebrations instead of addressing hunger and medical crises. “That is what we want to dismantle,” Obi declared.
2027 Will Be Different, Obi Vows
Obi told supporters that the 2023 election mistakes will not be repeated. He promised a new, grassroots-driven political movement. He stressed that the 2027 elections would focus on quality leadership and accountability. This is central to the 2027 overhaul plan.
“We must focus on getting the right people into the National Assembly… people who will bring peace,” he stated. Obi emphasized a transparent electoral process. “We will vote. The votes will count. And those who were not counted before, we will count them now.” He urged Nigerians to check candidates’ track records, not just their words. “Ask what they have done. That’s how we will know who can help fix this country,” Obi noted.
Call for Ballot Box Revolution Nigeria
Other speakers supported Obi’s call for change. Senator Nenadi Usman, Labour Party NCC Chair, praised Obi’s leadership. She called him a moral compass. Usman said, “This book tells a story far beyond politics… it is the story of accountability against impunity.” She urged citizens to actively shape Nigeria’s political future.
Keynote speaker Prof. Sam Amadi described Nigeria as showing “indices of failure.” He called for a legitimate democratic overhaul. “What we need is a ballot box revolution in Nigeria because it has legitimacy. That is what the Obidients are talking about,” Amadi said. He emphasised that values and productivity must return to public life.
