Easter celebrations were subdued across much of Nigeria following recent Plateau Benue killings. Tragically, violent attacks claimed the lives of over 150 residents in Plateau and Benue states. The incidents sparked widespread outrage and urgent calls for better security.
Leaders Respond to Violence
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State described the horrific events as “genocidal”. In Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia appealed directly to the federal government. He asked for increased intervention to tackle the ongoing insecurity. President Bola Tinubu strongly condemned the Plateau Benue killings. He vowed that “forces of evil will never prevail over our country.” In his Easter address, President Tinubu assured citizens his administration is focused on restoring peace. Tinubu stated, “I have given clear directives to the Armed Forces… to end insecurity decisively.”
Political Criticism and Security Actions
Despite assurances, opposition figures criticized the government’s response. Atiku Abubakar labelled the administration “utterly incapable” and lacking ideas to solve the security crisis. Peter Obi suggested closer collaboration between governments and traditional rulers. Senate President Godswill Akpabio pleaded with perpetrators to respect human life. Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directed commanders nationwide. He ordered increased police visibility and better intelligence gathering to ensure public safety. As the nation confronts these security challenges, leaders and citizens are calling for unity to create a safer Nigeria.
