Jos – The Plateau State Government has launched an urgent investigation into suspected cow poisoning after dozens of cattle died suddenly in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA). Officials are working swiftly to uncover the facts surrounding the incident in the Zanwar community.
The alarm was raised by Ya’u Idris, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in the area. He reported that 36 cows belonging to Mallam Samaila Nuhu died Wednesday afternoon. Idris stated the cattle appeared to have consumed poisonous garden eggs deliberately scattered across their grazing area near Tafi Gana junction. He urged the local Fulani community to remain calm, assuring them that security agencies are now handling the suspected cow poisoning.

Police confirmed the deaths, though their initial count noted 33 affected animals. Plateau State Police Command PRO Alfred Alabo reported that high-ranking officers, including Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) DIG Bzigu Kwazhi, visited the scene. The DIG met with the grieving owner and community leaders, expressing sympathy and urging against any form of retaliation. He promised a full investigation to bring those responsible for the cow poisoning to justice.
Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, reinforced the government’s commitment. She confirmed Governor Caleb Mutfwang ordered a thorough investigation into the suspected cow poisoning. “A team comprising veterinary experts, environmental officers, and investigators has been dispatched,” Ramnap stated, underlining the governor’s dedication to justice and peaceful coexistence. Bassa LGA Chairman Joshua Riti also condemned the act and appealed for peace while the investigation proceeds.
