Ibadan – A police operation successfully rescued 83 individuals held captive in a major human trafficking scheme discovered in the Orogun area, the Oyo State Police Command announced Saturday. The group of victims comprises 57 males, 26 females, and one infant, highlighting the diverse range of people targeted.
Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso confirmed the details of the raid on the residential building used by the syndicate. He stated the rescued individuals are now receiving care at the Police Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan. Initial reports suggest the total number rescued might be 84, including a child.
Foreign Nationals Lured by Deceit
Early findings suggest the victims are primarily citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo. They were reportedly lured to Nigeria with false promises of good jobs.
Sources speaking anonymously revealed a disturbing element of the scheme: traffickers allegedly extorted large sums in U.S. dollars from the victims’ families back home, exploiting their hopes and trust.
Human Trafficking Ibadan: Investigation Widens
The investigation into the human trafficking network is actively proceeding, according to Osifeso. He assured the public that the command is committed to uncovering the full extent of the operation and will share updates as they emerge. Efforts are focused on dismantling the syndicate completely and ensuring the victims receive necessary support and safe passage.
