The Nigerian Police Force has advised the Osun State Government to suspend upcoming Local Government (LG) elections. The police cite security threats and credible intelligence reports forecasting violence.
Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi released a statement Friday. The statement said, “Credible intelligence indicating a high likelihood of violence and significant security threats should the planned Local Government elections proceed in Osun State.”
The police say various groups, are reportedly mobilizing to cause unrest. These groups plan to disrupt public peace and negatively affect democratic order. The Police stated that the elections, held under present conditions, could risk lives and property.
“The Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, is fully prepared to take decisive action to prevent any breakdown of law and order,” the statement confirmed.
The police also referenced a legal clarification from the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. This clarification concerned local government administration in Osun State.
The police maintain their commitment to peace, protecting lives and property, and Nigeria’s lawful democratic processes. They advise the Osun State Government to reconsider and immediately suspend the planned elections.
