Priest Accused of Assaulting Teacher Over Lesson Fees

IFITEDUNU, NIGERIA – A Catholic priest, Reverend Fr. Jude Muokwe, is accused of assaulting a 50-year-old teacher over a dispute regarding lesson fees at Angel’s Primary School in Ifitedunu. The alleged incident took place on February 12, 2025, during school hours.

Mrs. Ikeorah Maureen, a teacher at the school, claims Fr. Muokwe entered her classroom and physically assaulted her, using a whip. A video circulating on social media, reportedly viewed by National Scoop, shows the teacher visibly distressed and displaying injuries. The core of the conflict appears to stem from disagreement about lesson fees.

Mrs. Maureen, a widow, stated that the priest’s actions were unprovoked. “He came and started flogging me and slapping me,” she said. She denies Fr. Muokwe’s claim that she had organized a meeting with other teachers.

Sources indicate the dispute arose after the teacher questioned Fr. Muokwe’s alleged failure to honor a prior agreement concerning student lesson fees.

The incident has prompted public condemnation, with calls for Fr. Muokwe to be held responsible.

The alleged assault raises legal concerns. Authorities may investigate the incident as a potential criminal offense. The incident also raises questions about teacher safety and dispute resolution within the school.
