Remo Stars NPFL Title: Club Secures First Championship

Ikenne – Remo Stars are the champions of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). This marks a historic first league title for the club. Head coach Daniel Ogunmodede led the team to victory. They secured the championship with a hard-fought win on Sunday. Remo Stars defeated Niger Tornadoes 1-0 at their home stadium. Olamilekan Adedayo scored the decisive goal late in the game. The goal came just six minutes from the final whistle, sparking huge celebrations. This win solidifies Remo Stars’ place among Nigeria’s top football clubs.

Breaking a Decades-Old Record

This championship is especially noteworthy. Remo Stars became the first privately owned club to win the NPFL title since 1996. Udoji United achieved that feat nearly 30 years ago. Since then, state-funded teams have mostly dominated the league. Remo Stars’ victory is a landmark achievement. It highlights the growing success of private investment in Nigerian football.

Ending the South West’s Long Wait

Remo Stars’ triumph also ends a long wait for the South West region. It has been 20 years since a club from this part of Nigeria won the NPFL title. The now-defunct Julius Berger FC was the last team from the region to lift the trophy back in the early 2000s. Remo Stars currently sit comfortably at the top of the league standings. They have earned 68 points from 35 matches played. Second-placed Rivers United trails significantly with 58 points. This victory signals a potential shift in football power back to the South West.
