Port Harcourt – A judge and head of elections now faces an arrest warrant. Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), is wanted by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The arrest warrant follows Enebeli’s repeated refusal to meet with lawmakers. The Assembly is demanding answers regarding the scrapped October 2024 local government elections. Despite multiple opportunities, Enebeli has not appeared.
No-Show Leads to Warrant
Lawmakers initially gave Enebeli 48 hours to present himself. They extended this deadline to 72 hours, hoping he would cooperate. Enebeli ignored both deadlines. As a result, the Assembly issued the arrest warrant during Monday’s session.
Legal Battle Heats Up
Instead of appearing, Enebeli and the RSIEC commissioners have taken a different route. They’ve filed a lawsuit in the State High Court. This lawsuit challenges the Assembly’s actions, creating a legal showdown between the electoral body and state legislators. This move is likely to prolong the dispute.
