Moscow – The 20-year strategic Russia Iran partnership is now official Russian law. President Vladimir Putin signed the legislation after its approval by the State Duma on April 8 and the Federation Council on April 16.
The agreement was initially signed in Moscow on January 17 by President Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. It includes terms for automatic five-year extensions beyond the initial 20-year period.

The agreement details cooperation in these sectors:
- Trade
- Banking
- Transport
- Energy (including peaceful nuclear energy)
- Arms control
- Combating international terrorism
The Federation Council stated the agreement would strengthen defense and security links. It also aims for better coordination on regional and global issues. The Russia Iran partnership reflects closer ties between the two countries.
President Putin called the agreement a “breakthrough document.” He stated it creates conditions for development in Russia, Iran, and the Eurasian region. Putin added the Russia Iran partnership provides a basis for trade and investment cooperation.
