Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary Russia Ukraine Easter truce. The ceasefire started Saturday evening. It will last until midnight on Sunday. Putin made the announcement in a televised address. He spoke to Russian chief of staff Valery Gerasimov. The halt in fighting aligns with the Easter holiday.
Ceasefire Details and Expectations
Putin stated the truce began Saturday at 1800 Moscow time (1500 GMT). It ends Sunday at midnight Moscow time (2100 GMT). He described the pause as “based on humanitarian reasons”. Putin ordered a stop to all military activity during this period. He stressed that Russia expects Ukraine to follow the ceasefire. Putin warned Russian forces must “be ready to resist possible breaches of the truce and provocations by the enemy.” He accused Ukraine of breaking past agreements over 100 times, specifically targeting energy infrastructure.
Background and Previous Attempts
This announcement follows recent attacks on energy facilities by both sides. A previous understanding to avoid targeting such sites broke down. Putin said the truce will test Kyiv’s sincerity regarding peace talks and agreements. Earlier ceasefire attempts during Easter and Orthodox Christmas in 2022 and 2023 did not succeed. Distrust between the sides prevented formal agreements. It is uncertain if this temporary Russia Ukraine Easter truce will hold. International figures, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have called for a ceasefire, but these calls have not produced results yet.
