Senate Bill Requires Local Offices for Social Media Firms

Abuja – Nigeria’s Senate passed a bill’s second reading. The bill requires major social media companies to have local offices in Nigeria.

Rules for Companies and Bloggers

Senator Ned Nwoko sponsored the bill. It targets Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Nwoko says the lack of local offices causes economic losses and compliance problems. The bill also regulates bloggers. They must have offices in a capital city and keep employee records. Nwoko said the bill aims for accountability. Senate President Godswill Akpabio supported physical offices for digital platforms. He was cautious about regulating bloggers. He said the bill is for taxes and records, not to limit speech. The Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security will review the bill. A report is due in two months. Local Offices would ensure compliance.
