Ilorin – Kwara State faced a violent Sunday as gunmen killed seven people in two separate incidents across different communities on April 21, 2025. The deadly events included a targeted shooting and a clash with local vigilantes, marking a significant attack.
Night Attack at Ilesha Baruba Park
Trouble began late Sunday evening. At around 9:30 p.m., ten armed men stormed the Ilesha Baruba Motor Park in Baruten LGA. They opened fire without warning on people gathered near a relaxation spot.
Police PRO Toun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed the tragic outcome. “As a result, six persons—identified as Alhaji Ja’awire, AbdulJabar, Mohammed Nasamu, and three others—lost their lives,” she stated. Two others were seriously wounded by gunfire.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Ilesha Baruba Morgue, while the injured receive hospital treatment. Police have arrested a suspected informant allegedly linked to the attackers, who is now aiding the investigation into this brutal attack.
Daytime Clash Near Kainji National Park
Earlier that same day, violence erupted near Kainji National Park. Around 11:30 a.m., a vigilante patrol team encountered suspected bandits in Kemanji, Kaiama LGA.
A fierce gunfight broke out. Reports indicate three of the suspected bandits were killed in the exchange. Sadly, the vigilantes also suffered a loss: member Yusuf Samba was fatally shot. “Our investigation culminated in the arrest of an informant, who admitted to collaborating with a group of bandits,” Ejire-Adeyemi added regarding the Kaiama incident.
Security Response and Governor’s Visit After Attack
In response to the violence, police authorities announced increased security measures in both affected areas. Tactical teams and intelligence-led patrols are working to restore calm and track down those responsible for the attacks.
On Monday, showing urgency, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited Kaiama LGA. He led a high-level security delegation to assess the situation on the ground. The governor met with military and police commanders, along with local traditional rulers and leaders.
Talks focused on strengthening security cooperation in the Kemanji, Karoji, and Kainji National Park zones. Officials reassured the public that the situation is being managed, with a strong security presence maintained.
