Simon Ekpa Charged in Finland: Terrorism Allegations

HELSINKI, FINLAND – Simon Ekpa, a prominent Nigerian separatist leader, faces serious charges in Finland. Finnish prosecutors have charged Ekpa, identified by Finnish broadcaster YLE, with inciting terrorism online. The case involves alleged actions linked to Biafran independence efforts.

The National Prosecution Authority stated, “A Finnish individual [has been charged] in a case involving suspected public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.” These alleged offences occurred in Lahti, Finland, between 2021 and 2024. Ekpa, a dual Finnish-Nigerian citizen, denies the charges. He remains in custody. The development means Simon Ekpa charged  is now a formal legal matter.

Online Actions Lead to Terrorism Allegations

Simon Ekpa is a vocal figure who claims to lead the Biafra Republic government in exile. His arrest in November followed increased scrutiny of his online role in separatist movements. He is known within a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ekpa gained attention for his strong online statements and material considered disinformation about Nigerian secession. His online activities prompted “several of AFP’s fact checks in recent years,” highlighting concerns about his influence. The situation where Simon Ekpa charged  follows these concerns.

Others Cleared; Ekpa Remains Sole Suspect in Case

Ekpa also had a local political role in Lahti. He served on the public transport committee for Finland’s conservative National Coalition Party.

Initially, Finnish authorities suspected four other individuals of financing Ekpa’s operations. The prosecution, however, announced on Friday that charges against these four were dropped. “The prosecutor had decided to drop charges against four others in the case due to a lack of evidence,” the statement said. This leaves Simon Ekpa charged  as the only individual currently facing prosecution in this investigation.
