State Government Warns of Potential Flooding, Urges Residents to Prepare

Lagos – Lagos State officials predict above-normal rainfall this year, raising concerns about potential flash flooding across the region. Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab shared this warning during a recent press briefing, adding that the state is actively monitoring the situation. Lagos has installed a network of weather and river gauge stations to track conditions in real-time.

What Residents Need to Know

Wahab specifically urged residents living near major rivers and drainage channels to be vigilant. Areas like Owode, Iwaya, Makoko, Badia, Ijora, Isaalu, Pota, and Shibiri are particularly vulnerable. Those residents should be prepared to evacuate to higher ground if necessary.

The state is working closely with the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority (OORBDA). This collaboration helps manage water release from the Oyan Dam, a key factor in preventing widespread flooding. Wahab also highlighted that officials are keeping a close eye on low-lying communities such as Agiliti, Agboyi, Itowolo, and Ajegunle. The potential for the Ogun River to overflow its banks poses a significant flooding risk to these areas. The government’s proactive steps are designed to protect residents and minimize property damage from the anticipated heavy rains.
